Sarasota, Florida.

Wanted to share some photography that I captured when I traveled to Sarasota, Florida. I traveled here during the Christmas holiday with my father. The trip was relaxing and it felt amazing to travel to the warmer weather. If you’re looking to book a trip somewhere warm I highly recommend Sarasota, Florida. There are many activities you can do there. There is also the Ringing Brother Circus Museum there where you can tour John Ringling’s house which is where the museum is located at. These pictures I captured using an DSLR Camera by Canon.

Tips for a recent college graduate

Do not give up.

You’ve spent countless hours studying, writing papers, talking with professors, creating meaningful memories… and just like that it’s done. All of a sudden your life changes in the blink of an eye. You graduate.

I’ve am one of those individuals like I mentioned in my last post about adjusting to adulthood. You’ve realized that you won’t see your friends as much anymore, committing to a full-time job, and saving money. You’ve realized that finding a career starting job is a full-time job itself. It’s scary, but you can do it. I personally started applying for jobs back in March. I wanted to be one of the students that came out of college with a full-time job set up for the week after the graduate. Unfortunately for me, that was not the case. However, I have found a position in Philadelphia this July that is for a few months full-time that will help me with my career, build professional connections, and help grow my skills. This took countless hours, talking with recruiters, finding job leads, introducing myself and networking.

One of the most important things that I have learned is to put yourself first and DO NOT give up an opportunity. You must do what you believe is best for you. Beginning your career is HUGE. Finding that entry level job that leads you to becoming successful professional. My major is Communication, we are similar to Business Admin majors except, we’re a little more on the creative side. Not saying that Business Admin majors aren’t creative because I have seen Business majors drowning in school work, and unless you are a Finance major, we know how hard Financial Accounting is. We see communication and building relationships as key. Business is important in the communication world, you have to understand how companies work. Today, many companies utilize communication majors for social media, digital marketing, online communication. No matter what your major is, you know you are going to do great things in the world. Ultimately we are working in the business world. Everything is a business. Schools, companies, entrepreneurs and startups, computer science, political science, biochemistry and more. It’s all a business. It’s important when figuring out what job is right for you, you figure out what you like to do. Some communication majors like me enjoy working in the city or in an office environment. You’ll know when you know.

Finding a job is competitive. Let me tell you how hard it was for me. Many say it’s all about who you know. Now as true as that may seem (sometimes it honestly is who you know) but sometimes you need to make yourself stand out. You ultimately need to sell yourself to a potential employer. Make sure your resume stands out. Even find someone to help you build your resume to get it to what employers want to see, there’s actually people that help build resumes for a living. You aren’t just competing with yourself, but you’re also competing with over 100,000+ students that just graduated like you.

Be Prepared. If you’re someone like me who maybe should have utilized a career development center at your university or college more, you’ll need to work on skills that can help you prepare for interviews, have your parents practice questions with you, make sure you answer questions accurately and create an elevator speech (click here to see what to include in an elevator speech). This can certainly help with your development as you prepare for an interview. Also include questions to ask the interviewer. You’re there because they saw potential in you, get to know who may be your supervisor, ask about volunteering, company culture, ask about the interviewers career path. Below are a few more tips I can recommend to you.

  • Learn about the company prior to the interview. You already know the company is going to ask if you know about them. I usually would type up a study sheet to memorize before going into the interview. Prepare with notes in a notebook to have out with you.
  • Bring a pencil/notebook. This is important. You want to be interested especially if it’s an important position for you, come with notes already written and take notes that are important.
  • Dress your best – be your best. On the day of the interview, dress business professional, tuck those shirts in, wear closed toe shoes, do your hair nice. You want to impress the interviewer as well as look professional.
  • Resume. Bring multiple copies of your resume. Chances are that the company actually already has your resume but it’s important to have some copies.
  • Confidence. If you go into an interview confident and positive, you’re more likely to communicate better. Get rid of those nerves. Talking with people isn’t that hard, just sell yourself, show the company why they should invest in you and your skills.

Understanding Rejection. Don’t be discouraged if a company chooses another candidate. There can be various reasons as to why. You have to remember that there are people that are even more skilled than you are that are applying for entry level jobs. They may have 5 or more years of experience. You aren’t just competing with recent graduates but also those who have already been out in the work world. It’s not because you aren’t skilled enough. Don’t be upset if you do not get a job even though you feel like you should have. It will fall into place. You just need to understand and practice your skills more. Sit down, relax, and apply for more jobs. It will happen just don’t give up.

You will find something. Keep your hopes up and don’t stop.

Adulthood? What?

Adulthood, one of the words that I can’t seem to explain. Graduating college I didn’t realize the struggles that come along with this word. Now I know nothing about this growing up kind of thing. Being in my early 20s is an adjustment. For those who are in their 20s your young adulthood is just starting. Getting into the real world and finding a job isn’t as cookie cutter as you think. I have applied for several jobs to start my career, probably over 100 jobs. Constantly having the fear of “why didn’t they choose me?” Rejection is normal and it will happen plenty of times throughout life. It’s normal to feel discouraged, to be concerned, to wonder what’s next. Now I’m not exactly sure all the demographics of my audience, but for those who are in adulthood I’d love to hear some feedback about what some of your hardships are and what are some tips to get through different stages in life. I’m a strong believer in finding value and being yourself. Being an adult you’re learning new things, paying bills, taxes, insurance, working full-time, balancing family, building relationships, being a stable individual, being confident, sometimes being worried about having enough money to pay for groceries. No matter where you are in life, just keep going. Day by day trying to stay positive.

I’ve begun my trying to figure out my career I’m still constantly thinking if the choices that I’m making are exactly going to be the best for me. Like many of you, there’s that little voice in the back of your head and dang do I overthink like no other. I know for a fact that everyone overthinks sometimes, even you. You can’t even lie about it. We all use our brains and we all think. There is so much to think about when going into the real world. For me being professional is important. As a woman, I always try to remind myself that I have value. Reminding yourself that you are important and have value will help you gain confidence.

Now in reference to this image above. Adulthood is being careful, adulthood is crossing the street and making it there. But adulthood can be hardships. Sometimes things come crashing down, but I believe it’s important to remind yourself that you will find something, you will keep going, you will go down the right path. Although, you may not know exactly what path that is. It’s important to keep people in your life. You are going to hit hardships, but for us in our 20s hardships are bound to happen. There are several things that adults do that we may not know about, as a young adult and adjusting to life, we are all still learning, every day, one step at a time. And WE CAN DO IT. Ultimately it’s about keeping yourself motivated. The right job and career will come your way, you just can’t stop until you find what’s right. The ultimate goal is happiness.
